Daryl Silberman studied viola at the University of Colorado
at Boulder (BM), San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and
U.S.C. She is the former Product Specialist for Orchestral
Strings at the Yamaha Corporation of America and is a national
clinician for Knilling String Instruments. She has a private
teaching studio and freelances as a violist and violinist
in Los Angeles area with regional orchestras, movie studio
orchestras, chamber groups, and baroque ensembles. In addition,
Daryl is a licensed Kindermusik instructor and enjoys teaching
early childhood music.
Daryl plays many contemporary styles on both her traditional
instruments and a 5-stringed electric violin. She co-founded
the acoustic folk rock band "Naked to the World"
and the instrumental group "littlworld." She has
played and/or recorded with Guns and Roses, Depeche Mode,
Al Stewart, Michael Sherwood, Larisa Stow, Darryl Purpose,
Robert Morgan Fisher, E.B. Fraley, and many other singer-songwriters
and bands. For over 10 years Daryl has toured nationally as
a clinician for Knilling performing in the schools on her
traditional, classical violin and her 5-stringed acoustic-electric
violin. Her clinics, entitled "Connections: Inspiring
String Students by Connecting Classical and Contemporary Music"
have resulted in her performing in over 35 states addressing
audiences of all ages.
Daryl has directed her own "Alternative Styles String
Camp" at the Crowden School in Berkeley, CA and has been
a guest artist at many summer workshops. Daryl has been a
guest clinician at the Alan DeVeritch Viola Institute in Malibu,
Indiana University at Bloomington, the SUNY Fredonia NSOA-ASTA
summer camp, Birch Bay summer workshop, New World Symphony
outreach program, and has been invited to guest conduct and
solo with student orchestras. Additionally Daryl has presented
at numerous state and national MENC (Music Educator National
Conference) and ASTA (American String Teacher Association)
conventions. She has served as the chair of the 2006 ASTA
Alternative Styles Committee. She was invited to present clinics
at the Australian String Teachers Convention in Brisbane in
July 2006. This past summer ('07) she taught at Robert Gillespie's
Teacher Workshop at OSU, at Chamber Music Connections in Columbus,
Ohio, was the guest artist at "Fiddlin' Around In Georgia"
sponsored by GASTA, and will be performing clinics at the
NYSSMA summer workshop.
After living in the Los Angeles area for the past 4 years,
Daryl and her family are moving to Salem, Oregon where Daryl
has accepted a position as the West Salem High School Orchestra
director. It's a dream job for Daryl and she looks forward
to everything the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
